I think I read in this forum a while ago about how people will buy up common-date Buffalo nickels from coin merchants and then spend them, with the simple goal of getting them back into circulation.

What a cool idea! The coins are still legal tender so it shouldn't be a problem.

Just wondering if anyone has done this and what your experiences have been like.

Years ago I purchased some cull V nickels from my local dealer for about eight cents each and spent them. Only one cashier even noticed the old coin.

It was still fun to do.

I Like using the half dollars (or Ikes) because they are so much larger than other coins people really pause and look at them. I fear that unless the Buffalo was shiny, nobody would notice as its the same size and color as a regular nickel.

Too bad large cents are not available more cheaply, those would be fun to put in the spare penny cup at the gas station.

I don't buy them for the purpose of spending them, but inevitably I do spend SOME of them. As I've mentioned numerous times on this forum, using a Buffalo nickel in a vending machine makes whatever you're buying taste better.
