I think the font how APMEX is stamped into the bar isn't the correct font.. I am not sure about how APMEX has packaged their bars over the years but I have a suspicion that the packaging isn't right either.
Finally ... an XRF machine isn't always necessary... but testing each piece that you buy is VERY important.
1) Know the measurement specs of the pieces that you are buying.
2) Simple testing equipment can run you less than $200...
- even if you're buying pieces that are 1.4 K each.. it's still a HUGE cost to pay 5K for an XRF machine.. especially when profit margins are pretty small for buying and selling Ag or Au.
Long an short have certain steps that must happen before a transaction... ALWAYS follow them... and educate yourself as best as possible.
