I have heard that Canadian SML's are notorious for milk spots. Some have said that the spots appear long after the coins have been minted and sold. My 2013 1.5oz Polar Bear is getting a big hazy spot on the obverse and I know it wasn't there the day I bought it.

My question is regarding old US proof coins with milk spots. Did the coins come out of the Mint that way or did the milk spots develop on the coin over time?

Thank you.

It seems that only Coins/Rounds/Bars with .9999 silver are affected, .999 not so much so the older US proof coins should be good.

They dont often come from the mint with spots but develop over time, sealed or not dont seem to matter.

Milk spots happen at the mint during the strike, soapy water residue left over from cleaning the blank planchet gets struck into the coin and are there forever. Can not remove them without damaging the coin.

Some of the U.S mint sets , silver or clad have had milk spots I purchased from the Mint. These were from 2007 through 2014. Go figure?

NOT recommended, but I thought some of the bullion folks might want to chime in on this one...
