Some attribution of ancient often relies on that first glance "aha.........." When I first picked up this coin I said "aha! Byzantine" The planchet, the symbolism, the subject matter, all at first glance pointed to Byzantine. However, the coin in this image is actually from a Cruader state, Messina.
More precisely, the coin is a Doppio follaro bronze, roughly 17mm in size. One side depicts Ruggero in long robe, the other side depicts Christ enthroned.
