I don't know I can afford, at least for some time, a 1854 cartwheel penny with crosslet 4. There are two on ebay right now in very similar conditions, one holed, the other intact. The holed one isn't a bad price right now, but 6 days to go on the auction. The other is "buy it now" at $149.99 (or offer), which is probably overpriced. I know these, like Canadian coins tend to be, a bit erratic in price and I'm guessing if I wait I may find one in the $50-$75 range. I'm turned off by a holed coin, but would like to fill the "hole" in my collection. Anyone care to talk some sense into my head? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canada-Bank...em20ead76bb0http://www.ebay.com/itm/Bank-of-Upp...em35dbadaa4c

in the desc. of the low MS coin without a hole, I see that it says... "PLEASE NOTE: I will be away from my home 27 August-1 September, and will be unable to handle any sales or questions during that time." ...so even if you were to buy it, you wouldn't get it right away. Therefore, just wait a bit and see what the prices are for the biddable one in a few days.

Pretty good advice. I don't think I would pay much more. The hole really destroys a lot of value, though I don't have a good sense of how much it does on a more costly coin.

If you are unhappy with the hole, but considering buying it simply to fill a spot in your collection I say don't do it. You will ALWAYS be unhappy with the hole, as will others. You will probably want to upgrade, and may have a difficult time selling the holed one when the time comes.

Was the hold post mint damage?

Wait, these are not rare. You can get a nice one without a hole and not pay a fortune.

I'm not sure how many of that variety were minted, but I've always heard (and believed) they were not very common.

Depends on your definition of common. We'll never know how many were actually minted, the best we can do is guesstimate. I see about one a month unattributed, not exactly what I'd call rare, but far fewer than plain 4.
BTW, they are not cartwheel pennies, cartwheel pennies weighed a full ounce.

I agree with less common, perhaps almost hard to find. If you scan the ebay listings, there are normally less than 5 crosslet 4's of the 100 to 150 half penny and penny coins listed at a given time, both attributed and not.
