I have always been fascinated by dollar coins. In March 1972 I was getting Ike dollars from the bank and spending them. I saved the best 10 and kept improving them as time went on. One night I suddenly noticed that one was different and in higher relief. I believe that was the discovery piece for the type 2. I went to add it to my pile of 10 and discovered that 8 or 9 of them were already type 2. I had unconsciously selected these due to their better looks. One in every 6 or 7 from a live source was a type 2.

The next year I started searching for proof reverse circulating quarters. I did not know they existed, but I later found out they have been discovered. I was quite thrilled to find a 1969 D type H after looking at 20 quarters. Today I think I would have to look at hundreds of thousands of quarters to find one.

About 1999 I started looking for Wide AM cents. It had been reported that the proofs and circulation strikes were different. In June 2000 I found my first Wide AM 2000 cent. Shortly afterwards Bill Edwards found a 1998 Wide AM. The variety did not make the news until January 2001.

6 months or so ago I got back into coin collecting. 30+ years prior my brother and I used to CRH and pieced together a nice collection. When showing this to the kids, it rekindled my interest and I began CRHing with my son. Cents and nickels are our interest as they were for my brother and me. However, the LWC populations are a distant claim of what they were. I've always known about the key varieties of the day in 1977; 1955 and 1972 DDs but the hobby had grown since then with the varieties (or so it seems). In CRHing with my son, we've found several varieties. In truth, he searches for the LWCs and I do the varieties (I've more patience for it). The list is long now and growing, but here are a few -

1998 WAMs
2000 WAMs
A couple of 1985 DDO varieties
A couple of 1994 DDR varieties
A 19? capped die LMC
a 1994 LMC rotated 165 deg

Those were found in rolls over the past few months. But I also took a look at some of the collected coins from nearly 40 years ago -

1956 D/D LWC w/rep. mint mark
1970 S LMC w/jail bar clash marks

I have buckets of cents and nickels from the early days of collecting to go through, but for now, I'm getting new coin to look through and make discoveries. The interesting thing about variety collecting has been the shared discoveries of CCF members; their successes and posted pictures help to clarify what to look for. Books are great and sites like Coppercoins and VarietyVista very helpful, but seeing pics here brings things a bit closer for me. Hopefully you'll be posting pictures of your successes shortly.

Good luck!!

Proofart - your tag seems to match your early approach to collecting. Very cool that you naturally migrated towards a particular 'look' only to discover it's importance later.

1972 would seem to be a long time back, but it is only 42 years which seems like just yesterday to me now.
I was collecting coins 34 years before that. Somewhere I was led to believe that there were no modern varieties with the possible exception of very minor ones. The Ikes woke me up and I have adopted proof artwork on circulation strikes as one of my prime interests now. In the case of the Ike and quarter I can tell the varieties apart by touch alone.

The most fascinating sleepers I can think of are the 1968 S quarters which come in 4 or 5 varieties and the 1969 D which come in the same varieties. The 1968 S has two proof only varieties and at least two circulation strike varieties which are rather scarce.

Type (or variety) 2, as I used it, refers to the die variety that was used for 1971 S proof, all 1972 S and a few 1972 (Philly) Eisenhower dollars. It has high relief and had added incuse detailed touchup. Type 1 refers o the regular circulation strikes of 1971 and most 1972. It is in low relief with relief touchup.
There is a type 3 used from some 1972 through 1978. It is in high relief with relief touchup. The differences can be seen in the Caribbean islands and crater debris on the moon.

There is a type 1 and a type 2 for 1971 D dollar, but that is a different matter.
