I've completed roll searching 5 boxes of Nickels in preparation of filling up a new album and I was really surprised about the results. Here are the results of my searching (whole rolls only):

201x - 1
200x - 79
199x - 78
198x - 61
197x - 12
196x - 13
195x - 1

Total whole rolls = 245
Total mix date rolls = 5

I only found 1 coin from the '30's and 1 silver War Nickel.

Offhand I think that it is safe to say that taking coins from 1959 and prior in from the wild is not an easy find.

Don't know why I found the makings for 1 roll from the 201x's. I'd have thought that I would have seen much more in 5 boxes.

Either the moon, the weather, or the way I held my tongue could be the reason for so few.

Further, I would think that saving any nickel from 2979 and prior may prove interesting in the coming years.

Sometime back in the '70s or so, I read an article that people should start saving nickels from '59 and prior. I did but not on a scale that would be doing me any good at this time. I have about 40 rolls from that period sitting in a safe deposit box. I think that I'll be setting aside coins again from maybe '89 or '79 and earlier. It is probably one of those things that'll do me no good, but may help either the kids or grandkids

Find any 2009s? For over a year now I've been searching 2 rolls of nickels per week with my son and filling in and album. We've found Buffalos and War Nickels, but still no 2009s!

Nothing to report from the rest of the 40s? Your results seem very poor in general. Locational issues?

hammerrob: I have not segrated the 200x's down by years yet. Just taking it slow and going decade by decade. Last night I put the '30's through the '60's into the new album. Tonight I'll probably be looking at a few additional row of '60's to see if I can upgrade the ones I've already put in the album. So more to follow.

illz: After going through 5 boxes I do think that the results for prior to 1960 the results are sad. But I don't know if they are indicative of my location or of the population of these coins out in the wild. I know that in searching cents finding coins from the 1949 and prior are pretty much of a hit or miss proposition. But the results seen in the nickels are rather pathetic.

I'm going to continue looking after I look that the coins I've already segregated. However, all in all I think that the results for 5 boxes should be representative of what's out there because it is a random sample to start with. Even more so that looking at CWR. These boxes were put together by Brinks on one of their mass production packaging lines.

By the way coins from the '40's were less than a dollar's worth.

Would be interested in the number of coins you have found by early decade ... that's is 1930's, 1940's and 1950's.

I have posted many times in this forum on my nickel roll search find rates ... do know that at 314,800 nickels searched I am averaging a 1.315% find rate for nickels 1959 and earlier.

Give us your early (1959 and earlier) nickel find totals and we can compare ... perhaps not as bad as you initially are thinking.

nickelsearcher At this point in time it is almost impossible to say with any degree of accuracy what coins were where. However on a best guess, there were 1 from the 30's, 40's 8, and possibly 60 from the 50's. Which works out to roughly 1.36%

Nickels from 1959 and earlier aren't common, but they aren't really rare either. If you keep searching boxes, you'll end up with hundreds or thousands of them. And most of them are going to be in poor shape. The question I've been wondering is what do you eventually do with all the nickels from the 30s, 40s, and 50s?

It takes time but it's not hard to build up a hoard of 40s/50s nickels at least. 1940, 1941, 1946, and Ds from 1954-59 are going to be your most common finds. I stopped keeping non-AU '58-Ds because I was finding so many of them. Truthfully I don't consider anything after 1955 to be a true keeper except for the 1958-P... that one is quite rare for a later coin.

Well, I've completed my initial search for coins to fill this album. Suffice it to say that I have many holes that need to be filled and more than a few coins that need to be updated.

In summary, I have initially found no San Francisco mint marked coins. However, I know that I have seen a few in my initial search sort. I'll be finding those later. Additionally, I have a few current San Francisco coins somewhere in my stacks.

My initial search to fill the books was limited to what coins I had left unwrapped that would not fill a complete roll and then I looked at 3 additional rolls. Sort of to flush out the initial dregs.

I only filled in only 1 coin from the '30's (missing 5). From the '40's I've found 11 and am missing 20.
From the '50's I've found 19 and am missing 6.
From the '60's I've found 17 and am missing 0.
From the '70s I've found 17 and am missing 10 (all proofs).
From the '80's I've found 19 and am missing 10 proofs and a '88d.
From the '90's I've found 22 and am missing 10 proofs.
From the '00's I've found 24 and am missing 12 proofs.
From the '10's (through 2011 only) I've found 4 and am missing 2 proofs.

So I have a lot of work still to do plus a lot of ssorted and unsorted nickels to search through (3 sorted and 5 unsorted boxes).

My work is in front of me. So back to work.

Also, it is probably safe to say that all found coins from the start of series through 1999 are mostly subject to updating.

In fact my other up to date album for non-proof Jefferson's may be in line for updating also.

This hobby is certainly starting to get away from me fast. I haven't even started my pre-state quarter album yet nor my Presidential dollar albums yet either.

I have completed many modern series (a few more than once). It is time consuming.
