This morning my friend tossed me this counterfeit 1896 Morgan, I seen most modern day counterfeits but this one was pretty bad even for crappy looking fakes. Anyone happen to know if maybe this is a early attempt at counterfeiting.

That is the worst counterfeit I've ever seen. It looks early, and probably circulated.

He thought it was legit struck on a wrong planchet, then he told be it was hand carved lol, then I showed him the die crack on the reverse. He ended up giving it to me for free, although I still can't find another online. It appears to be struck on copper or brass, maybe even bronze, weighs 18.7 grams.

Now that's saying something.

It's so bad, it's actually a bit interesting. Love to know where it's been.

I wouldn't be surprised if this were a contemporary fake.
