Hello anyone, recently inherited collection with many dark toned coins. From what I gather, toned coins are appreciated but only if colorful and not too much. Many of those I've come across have seemingly "too much", very dark, some dark green and blackened even. Some have light colors that could be viewed positively I guess, but my question is for those that might be too much, is there a tarn-x or product that is suggested to remove it. The half dollars from the early 1800s in particular are all brand new except this stain issue. Can it be removed with a recommended solution?

Although the stuff can be removed, chances are it'll destroy the collector value of the coin to do so.

You can always dip silver in an acetone solution, it may remove some minor staining, but, harsher-unwanted toning can-not be removed without effecting the coins surface. Solutions such as tarn-x or jewelers solution will remove toning, but, leave an unnatural finish and will lower the value of your coins. You can send the coin to NCS for 'conservation', but, I highly doubt they can do better than acetone.

A pro conservation can do better but will the value of the coin be more then the price to conserve by a pro?
