Went to a yard sale 2 days ago and my son bought 3 stuffed animals for a dollar. I asked the guy, who looked to be about 80 years old, if he had any coins. He said yes, but not selling. He told me he had 50K worth of Morgans, and everything. Yesterday, my son and I were out for a walk, and happened by the same yard sale. Just for a lark I said to the guy, 'selling any Morgans today?' And we started talking, and he said, "Do you want to see some of them?" He motioned to his apartment door nearby. We went into the ground floor corner apartment, and right there in his living room, he opened a cabinet, about 24" wide, by 4'tall, and it was FULL. NO SECURITY AT ALL. The first thing I said was, "those should be locked up." I told him I had nowhere near what he had, and it was in a safe. He said they would be locked up soon. But anyway, he pulled out a small box with about 20 loose Morgans in flips. They were nice and looked original, no cleaning, all xf to unc...yada, yada, I got out of there pretty quickly, but gave him my # in case he wanted to sell a few.

You better start mowing his lawn, cleaning out his gutters, and all those other courteous things.

Next time I see him, will probably ask if I can wash his car or anything.

One funny thing, when I asked him to take my number, he wasn't too jazzed, but his wife, who was on oxygen, gave him the nod.

Might take a walk over there tomorrow.

Now that is weird. With all the crime around today, I can't even imagine showing a stranger my coins or anything of value. I don't even let strangers in my garage. As an example my Son USED to leave his large garage door open all the time when working on cars. One day the entire garage got cleaned out and in a few hours. Crimes dealing with coins is so common it seldom makes the news around me. I just can't imagine why that guy would do that. IF your in the mood, you may want to go back there and try to explain life to this guy. I know what he did was probably an attempt to show off but still not smart.

I think it depends on what city/environment this is in. I live in a small town in Indiana, and this type of story doesn't seem odd to me. People around here are nice. Not saying there isn't crime in my town, but nothing like a big city.

I have sold/bought things off craiglist numerous times, I have been in other peoples homes, and they have been in mine.

If he was 80 and his wife was on oxygen, it sounds like he was testing the water on a potential buyer?

Agree on both counts. Yes I live in a fairly small town, but crime is certainly a possibility. That's why the FIRST thing out of my mouth when he swung open the cabinet door, was about locking that stuff up, and how I have a safe.

I certainly would never have let a stranger in my house even with a kid in tow. Frankly it probably wasn't the best idea for me to even go into his apartment, but there were plenty of people around.
