Ok, so I've had this set since my dad gave it to me in '87, he was a pilot and it worked out great for my hobby

I've had these for years and years and gave them away once only to get them back! So I got back into coins and decided to dig up what wasn't back home. So I knew I had these and wanted to take a closer look, now that I know a little what sort of things to look for.

So I look through my loupe and see nothing too crazy until I get to the last coin, a penny. I will just focus on the missing denticle? or dot? but there are a few strange things with this coin and you will notice points where they don't belong in several other places (over one of the "N"s)

Please help me identify this variety!

Thanks everyone, there is an amazing wealth of knowledge on this forum and I'm glad I found it.

Hi there 6thCents! This is not actually a Proof Set but is one of The Royal Mint's Brilliant Uncirculated / Specimen Sets. The Proof Sets are sealed in a much larger box and have mirror fields and frosted designs.

As a guess I'd say it's struck though grease or the die was damaged. It's quite interesting to see this on a coin from a BU set as they are supposed to be struck with greater care than circulation coins.

I've checked my own 1987 set and the 1p is perfectly normal.

Hi Rob and thanks for the clarification! Now that you say that, I see the difference.
here are more photos. Thanks again for your input and is this something I should send in to get graded? I have 8 vouchers and I'm narrowing down what I should send in, never saw this flaw so I just now considering sending it in? My reasoning is what you were saying that these were supposed to have extra quality control thus errors are probably limited?

Hi 6thCents - thanks for posting the larger photos. I'm not an expert on TPGs or errors so I should wait to see what someone else says. Error coins are not as popular with collectors in the UK as in the US but it is catching up a bit. I'd personally leave the coin in the set as it's certainly unusual to find an error coin in a BU set.

Thank you for taking a look at yours to compare and the insight on the UK collectors market. I'm going to a large show tomorrow and I'm hoping I find a dealer who can shed some more light on the matter. Errors in these sets are interesting because of the scrutiny, I wonder if this is a variety or if enough of them even got out for that to happen. There must to be others but who knows how many? I'll post an update if I get any news on it tomorrow.
