im just curious about a high grade penny such as this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/1899-Canada...em566972fd17 it is graded ms63 red lacquered, if it wasnt lacquered would it bump up to ms 64 red? or would it still be ms63?
Clear coating with lacquer was a common practice in the old days to protect the surface - prevent tarnishing. Acetone bathing will dissolve the lacquer. Since it is removable, not sure why it would be thought (in modern times) that it is an impairment when in a previous era it was a measure of preservation.
