I have the opportunity to pick up some Franklin halfs soon. Not sure about dates or mintmarks, but I'll get to pick through them. Is $10 each too steep? Anything I should keep a look out for?
Thanks!

I think $10 is about right. I usually pay about $10-15 per each, sometimes less. It's pretty even across the board, I think, since the series was relatively short and there are not really any key dates. I picked up a 1949-S for $15 last week, and that's really the most I've paid for any of mine. I also picked up a cleaned 1963 for under melt earlier this summer, so it varies.

As a collector I say, keep an eye out for condition, the difference between circulated/worn and AU/BU is huge. I think that Franklin halves are a sleeper series with great upside down the road. Franklin halves are my current favorite :) and I love going through the "junk bin" at the local LCS. Last week I pulled out three AU/BU 1954 D halves all for $7.50 each. After hunting down and paying good money to complete my BU Dansco set I now have a much bigger appreciation for junk bin finds. As a stacker, I think $10 is a fair price if you get to pick your coins. Good luck with your purchase!

Sounds Reasonable but if you get em slabbed with MS64 or better be prepared to pay much more!

For a Franklin half in EF or below, $10 is a good price. Prepare to pay more with AU and up. For an uncirculated common date I usually pay around $15. There are certain dates that have premiums in BU, like the 1949-D, 1952-S, and 1955. Consult the RedBook for those. 😁

Here is what I picked up today. 23 coins at $10.00 each, $230 total (hard math right?). I was going to ask the guy to drop his price some, but I don't want to sour the relationship I am building with him, as he has pretty reasonable prices, plus I was able to use my credit card to purchase them, so that in itself is a bonus (cash back bonus that is! ) The grades are the best approximation I could determine from the PCGS Photograde. They are sorted by grade and I have taken pics of the higher grade ones. What do you think? 1957 MS63 1963-D MS63 1955 MS61 1959 AU58 1958-D AU53 1959-D AU53 1961-D AU53 1962-D AU53 Cleaned, I think. 1953 XF45 1962 XF45 1951-S XF45 1961 XF40 1949-S XF40 1953-D VF30 1957-D VF30 1958 VF20 1949-S VF20 1953-S F15 1954-S F12 1956 VG10 1948-D VG10 1951-D VG10 1952-S VG10

For those higher quality coins I think 10 is a fair price. I've seen online them going closer to melt around 8 or even less now that silver is dropping again.

1955 is the rarest date, so getting that in MS for $10 is a steal. The rest of the AU-BU are worth about $12-15. Most of the EF or worse coins are really only worth about melt, so $7-8. I'd say you about broke even in terms of what you could resell them for. But you didn't have to pay shipping on ordering all those individually (not to mention times) and you got to cherrypick unique dates and mints.

For those in better grades, you made a fantastic deal. Even the plain worn ones are OK. Great way to fill an Album.

I would have snagged those at 10 bucks each with no hesitation at all. Good deal!

He had $50 face value. Pm me and I'll see if he is willing to work a deal out for you.

I've bought one for as low as $5. That's lower than melt..

I think I would have picked the MS and possibly AU for $10 each. The more worn ones are usually bought and sold based off of melt, currently around 13.6x. Your local dealers may be asking somewhere around 14-16x. Overall, not too bad of a deal and a great start to a franklin set!
