Starting in a months time; ebay will introduce a new cancelation policy for buyers. The Buyer will be given an hr after winning an auction to change their mind and cancel the transaction as long as Seller hasn't shipped. It's aimed at reducing the unpaid item disputes. The buyer will be able to iniate the cancelation request. I'd like to hear sellers thoughts on this new policy?

Some sellers will just mark them shipped as soon as they end.

I don't think it's a bad policy. An hour isn't very long, so anybody having buyers remorse will be able to quickly contact the seller and resolve the issue. This will prevent an elongated unpaid item dispute. And while some sellers, mostly the high volume sellers such as APMEX or Liberty Coin mark their items shipped within minutes, most sellers don't do this. I think ebay finally had a good idea

Good to know, I wasn't aware of that.
BUT.......now buyers can let themselves get sucked into a bidding war with no consequences, and just cancel their purchase.
More pro-buyer policy.

This opens the chance for buyers to bid on similar items from different sellers and if they win two auctions they will pay for the cheapest and cancel the other one.

I don't like the new policy. As already stated, bidder chases two coins and then decides to cancel on the one that will cost him more.
It is not going to cut down on non paying bidders, it's just an invite for more problems. I have only had to open 4 non paying item cases (in over 300 auctions), 2 ended up paying and 2 got unpaid item strikes and I re-listed. It's best to set all your buyer requirements at the strictest level.
I think this new rule will open up pandora's box, it will be abused, and a what point will bidders/buyers be held accountable? after 5 cancels? 10?....eBay has not stated any policy.
time will tell...

Defeats the purpose of an auction if high bidder can back out.

ebay is going to do whatever they want to. You either adapt to the changes or find another venue to sell on. I don't have many NPB's or requests to cancel, so I don't think the 1-hr to cancel rule will affect me. If it happens, it happens. The one rule change I thought was a little of an overreach is the "Extended Holiday Return Period" affecting items that end Nov 1st through December 31st. For Top Rated Sellers to receive their 20% discount they must offer the extended return period. So, for an item that sells Nov 1st, the Buyer was until Jan 31st to initiate a return....by my calculation that's 89 days! I think we'll see a lot of returns by Buyers who will find better deals in early January and will then return their Nov/Dec purchases. People will manipulate the system to their advantage. That's just the way it works.

Of course I'd never suggest that now we can really mess with unethical sellers
