I have heard that there are errors and omissions in the 4th edition Overton book. Have any of you found that to be true? I have been able to find everything that I have been looking for in the 4th edition and have found no errors.

The reason that I'm asking is that I am considering selling my 3rd edition, but I don't want to do that if there is information contained in it that is different from what is in the 4th edition.

Don't sell that 3rd edition! The 4th is riddled with errors where Parsley just made up rarity ratings and die marriages. The Bust Half Nut Club has come up with a complete set of errata for the 4th edition which includes several hundred (most of them small, but several rather large errors). I can find it if you want. Also, the 3rd edtion is preferred by all the JRCS and BHNC guys I've talked to, and it was highly recommended to me by many. To quote a very respected early dealer "only buy the 4th edition if you can't find the 3rd after a couple of months of searching." The only thing that the 4th edition has is 3 new die marriages since 1990. And they're all R8's.

Unfortunately, all I've got is the 1st (Beistle Numbers), 2nd and 4th editions along with a 1st edition Edgar Souders Bust Half Fever. I've noticed the information provided in each volume varies and each complement one another. I will eventually get a 3rd.

When I began attributing my coins I wasn't "online" so to speak and had about 20 or 25 attributed using the Beistle system and the 1st edition as the reference. Talk about hard, the picture examples are tiny compared to the current edition. Mr. Joe Garbarini straightened me out and I was on my way, LOL...

I've seen several third editions pop up on ebay the past few months, it just takes some luck to get one. I'd also check with some of those numismatic book dealers too, since they may have an old 3rd edition in the back room that isn't listed on their website. One of my "mentors" for early halves was really, really nice and gave me a copy of the third edition, but I know that he bought it from ebay.

Benji- you could always try buying the fourth edition and printing off a copy of the errata if you really need an overton book. I'd also print off a copy of the BHNC's latest rarity revisions no matter which copy you ultimately get. The third edition is 17 years old, and the fourth edition has a LOT of mistakes when it comes to rarity ratings. I'll get that link too, if anybody out there wants it.

On a semi-related note, Ed Souders has reprinted the 2nd edition of Bust Half Fever. He's accepting orders now, and it's around $85 shipped. I've heard that it's an excellent book, and my copy's in the mail!

Thanks, guys. I'll hold onto the 3rd edition and use that in conjunction with the 4th edition.

Sorry, Benji.
