Hmm. There's no timing of new issue releases discussed, so I'm wondering if it's really "news". The RBA is always designing new banknote designs and security features; that's part of their job. The only "news" is the evidence for increased counterfeiting submitted to committee, making it more likely some of those new ideas and concepts will be used sooner rather than later.

"The people on the banknotes will be the same, the colour palette, if you like, will be the same. The sizes will be the same," she said.

"But they will look different because there will be now security features there and they'll look different than the current ones.

"The two series will co-circulate, so sometimes you'll get an old series, sometimes you'll get a new one, but gradually what will happen is that we will withdraw the old series and the new series will take over.

Well that answers a few questions but I would still like to know when we will see our first new notes.

Also will they be like those horrors that they gave us a sneak preview of in 2012?

I'm glad nothing came of them. I reckon the responses to those intended designs sent the artists back to the drawing boards, as the notes didn't appear. Thankfully!

It would be entirely possible to add new security features while keeping the current designs.

The plan is that later this year the new $5 and $10 will be issued with the remaining denominations issued 2017.

The designs and colours will be similar to the existing ones with some changes to accommodate the new security features.

Thank goodness for that MOR!

Those other designs that were floated around some time ago were awful.
