For those of you who use a loupe, what's the best magnification? I'm looking at getting a 30x. Is that good enough, or do I need to go higher? I can't afford a microscope at the moment, and with a loupe I can look at a coin up close whenever I need to.

I personally use a double 10X loupe when you put them together they come up to 20X which is usually all you need unless you are looking for very small defects.

If people are looking for something for casual use, I just got two of these Parlinda lenses. One to carry around with me and one for home. The two plastic lenses together give you 2x-8x magnification. With shipping they were about $17 all together.

I have a Lichtig 10x loupe that is just enough magnification for me. If I need to see better, I also have a lighted magnifier attached to my desk as well.

I have a Bausch & Lomb 5x to 20x pocket magnifier. I'm very satisfied with it. It has three lenses that can be used together to make 20x. I almost always use the 5x though. Right now they're $27 at opticsplanet.net. This is the only one I've ever used so there might be better options out there.

I just bought a 10X Hastings Triplet Loupe which works fine except the field of view is kind of small. I gave around $45 for it. Plus I have an Anco 10X which I actually like better because the field of view is much bigger. Of course the Hastings is better quality and magnification is much clearer, I'd much rather use my Anco which only cost me $10.

If you have a 50mm F2.8 or so camera lens, try it as a loupe. I found a East German (Very inexpensive) Praktica at a yard sale. The lens
is Carl Zeiss and it is superb. about 5-6x magnification , wide field of view, and the resolution is amazing. The best part it, it cost me $5.00.
Try this you will like it> I plan to put the camera body on the Bay to get my $5.00 back :)
