How do you buy or go to an estate sale? How do you know where and when it is happening?

www.auctionzip.com

This site will list any auction/estate sale near you and most provide pictures...

Each auctioneers set there own rules for bidding on stuff...

Or you can check your local newspaper... But most likely they are listed on the site so it is just as easy to check there...

The wife and I have been going to estate sales for the fast three years and I've yet to find any that offer any coins for sale. I occasionally see sports cards and comics available; but no coins. It's very rare to find any silver jewelry or silverware too.

Perhaps coins are available at estate 'auctions'.

Here in Canada I've had mixed luck at estate auctions. Coin and banknote lots actually come up regularly. Best finds have been at auctions that are only advertised in the local paper. I don't live in a major city, so collectors are thin on the ground, this combined with a high ratio of aging population can make for good hunting. Sometimes coins and banknotes are not mentioned specifically, especially if there's not a large amount they'll often be lumped together with "collectibles" or "miscellaneous jewelry" lots. This can result in great scores.

we've been visiting auctionzip for years now. Recently had a 500 lot collection at an auction we visited. The auction listed a few coins, I was greatly surprised when I got there and saw the size of the estate.

I have seen 3 large estate coin auctions on auctionzip over the past year, and I usually only check the saturday auctions.

Keep away from Estate Auctions. Those are not estate sales. In many instances a company takes over those and their prices and policies are not always good. Trouble with a real Estate sale is finding them. Usually they are advertised similar to garage or yard sales in local newspapers. Unfortunately most have been gone over by relatives, friends and neighbors long before you get there. Usually you'll see nothing but left overs. Remember that an Estate sale is normally someone's household items due to them moving, a divorce, death in family, etc. And those are just gone over by so many that by the time you find it, not much left at all.
However, as with garage and yard sales, always ASK. Sometimes expensive items are not out on display. Sometimes some items are not even considered worth selling. You should always ASK.

Many people list estate sales, garage sales, etc. on craigslist.

I have had mixed results, but find more coins at estate sales than garage sales.
