I've had this coin forever and I would like to know what it is and the value if anyone knows. It is gold/bronze/brass in color but the sound of the metal when dropped on the counter is a dull thud instead of a high ping like brass/bronze usually have. The edges are also bulging and curved. The reverse impression isn't as deep as the obverse impression, the 9 in the date is slightly askew. Any help identifying it would be greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry if this photo shows up small. I had no idea how to resize it to 100mb and I've never used this forum before.

It's a dryer coin(damaged in the inside of a dryer) and probably just cleaned. Sorry

Oh, no need to be sorry, I just had no idea what it was or why it looked so odd. Why would it change color though? I thought 1959 pennies were made of 95% copper.

I've had it forever and it's not tarnished. I work with copper on a daily basis and it is not copper.

I don't think it's a Dryer Coin. I don't see any wear on the surface. Maybe someone started spooning it. I'd like to see what an expert says.

Is the diameter of the coin larger or smaller than a normal penny?

There is no wear, no marks on the surface like it was tumbled. I haven't cleaned it at all since I found it in a jar of other coins. I measured another penny with a digital caliper and it measures 19mm. The coin in question measures 20.20mm. What does it mean to spoon a coin? :)

People spoon a coin by hitting their edges to raise it, then drill the middle to get a ring. You can google it for more detail, since I'm not very good at describing it.
If the diameter is bigger it might be in a bezel, because Dryer Coins have a smaller diameter.

ahhh! spooning a coin..that's interesting. I make jewelry so I'll have to check into that in more detail. I'm still confused why it is gold/brass in color. It does not sound like copper or brass when tapped or lightly dropped.

Exactly 3 grams? How many decimals is your scale to?
They're technically brass/bronze in composition, and they can tone yellow. If it's too far off normal toning colour, it might have been plated.
Look at this post, it might explain why it doesn't sound copper: https://goccf.com/t/181567#1673407, I'm quite certain it's because of the extra thick bit.

scale goes to .00. It is definitely a bright brass color. The photo is poor because I didn't put it in my lightbox, and used incandescent lighting instead. Plating is possible! I never thought of that. It's just a big mystery now that's driving me nuts.

That's strange, a normal 1959 would weigh 3.11 grams. If it was put in a bezel, it would weigh more.
What does the reverse look like?

the reverse looks just like a current penny with lincoln seated in the memorial.. I will post better pics tomorrow under a new thread because I don't see where I can add a photo in the reply box here.

Do you see the "Reply to Topic" link above the quick reply box? You can upload pics through there.
