with the new 50th Anniversary Kennedy Halve being gold and identical with half dollars how long till a thief or a family member takes it out of its casing and thinks this isn't worth anything and spends it, deposits it with a bunch of other halves, or some other crazy way these rare coins wind up in circulation...... i was lucky in a box of halves I pulled three silver half proofs, it a was a good day for me, opening up that roll and the edge was screaming hi ho silver and away ( for those of the younger generation that was the lone rangers saying)....

I just got an 1885 O Morgan form my cashier at the gas station. Cage is always on the hunt for me. In excellent shape other than being polished.

Thought it was maybe fake as it looked odd. But it weighed within 3 hundredths of a gram of where it was supposed to and was not magnetic

Is the gold JFK the same size as its base metal counterpart?

I keep hoping to find old Commemoratives like the 1892 & 93 Columbians!! But a gold JFK would be sweet!

Gold JFK will be great but realistically I expect to find the silver version and uncirculated clad version.

There is no way on earth one of those would make it through a coin counter, so you would only have a shot if you were to search customer rolls.
But, given that people have done crazier things to fill coin rolls, I don't doubt that at least one gold half will find its way into a roll eventually.

I can just see a 19 year old cashier at the local Gas & Cigs Mart "That ain't no coin, Man. The 'Nited States ain't never made no big yellow coin like that, take it back and give me two quarters, man."
What is it that some say "I don't understand it so I don't like and its stupid."
Maybe I am just getting old...

To be completely honest, I probably wouldn't take a coin as payment if I couldn't immediately identify it. Cashiers can identify all (commonly) circulating coinage and notes, but some bosses are real sticklers when it comes to balancing one's till, and it's always better to err on the side of caution rather than lose your job over a counterfeit or accepting funny money. Heck, if I wasn't the type to risk 2 quarters on a novelty, I wouldn't take a gold half even if I was aware of the commemorative. Who's to say this isn't some privately-issued novelty made out of *really* heavy fake gold?

I found a gold-plated quarter a couple months ago in a box of hand-rolled quarters. It was a Wisconsin State Quarter.

Well, finn235, I am a cashier and as such I am responsible for my drawer and what goes through it. I have seen coworkers refuse Silver certificates and IKEs because "The'Nited States ain't never made no big ole coin like that." So yea, I can see some know it all throwing a fit over a gold half. I would throw a fit too.. I would not be able to get two quarters out of my purse near quickly enough.
