I have always wondered how the raynox clip on macro conversions lenses work. I managed to get an example of the MSM 505( 32 diopter/ 8 times magnification) at a cheap price. I had a quick play with it and am relieved I got it cheap. it is exactly like sticking a magnifying glass in front of your camera lens. Only the center part of the picture is magnified well. as you move out from the center distortion becomes very evident, more so than a microscope objective. The depth of field is slightly deeper than a microscope objective, but still so shallow that stacking is necessary I have no idea on the lower magnification offerings from Raynox but, unless you get one cheap, a microscope objective plus all the associated adapters would be a cheaper option than the MSN 505.

Yeah, that one's a bit much. Their DCR-150 and (especially) 250 are excellent for the task of converting an "average" camera to a coin-shooting one and are highly recommended if a bit pricey at $75 for the DCR-250.

I was looking at this for my T2i since I can't get too close with the kit lens. Sounds like a good buy instead of a very expensive macro lens.

I had another go with the MSN 505. This time I threw it on a 200mm lens and used an APSc camera instead of full frame.....the results were much more impressive. I don't doubt the 150 and 205 are good. I suspect the 505 on a full frame just doesn't have the edge to edge sharpness required. While on APSc the fuzzy distortion never falls on the sensor.

This is one reason I have never made the plunge to buy a FF camera. Most lenses have the characteristic of falling-off in illumination, sharpness, distortion, chromatic aberration, or all the above on FF sensors but may be fine on APS-C. Plus, FF cameras require 50% higher magnification to fill the frame, so the tradeoffs get even worse. Many of the EL-Cheapo lenses I am so fond of might not cover FF very well, certainly not at higher mags.
