We have many collectors here with many facsinating ancient coins, so I propose the question, what is your favorite mint?

Some mints vanished with their inhabitants long ago, some authorities produced coins from parts unknown, but some of the mints of antiquity are still in operation.

I would love to hear what others think. Weigh in on your favorite mints and a little about why, we could make for a fun and educational discussion.

Most of the current mints in operation bombard my e-mailbox with such an enormous load of product, that it is hard to believe there are enough buyers around. I like some of the private mints--Grove Minting is a favorite in the USA, also the ones who produce the Noah's Ark coin in Germany. I like the new Liberty's Glory design in the USA, also done privately. I am not a big fan of government mints and most coins these days end up in a jar at home, instead of being valued as usable money.

Can't say I've given much thought to collecting coins based on their mints. It seems more relevant to Roman Imperial collectors.

I love Pontus coins, so I would say Amisos mint. I have no idea whether Amisos was the only mint in the area.

As far as ancient coins go, probably Antioch, but that's really only because of that one great bargain bin (which is mostly filled with their coins).
I'd really like to get a coin from the Theopolis mint, but probably couldn't afford one, unfortunately.

I actively collect Lugdunum betweek A.D. 276 and A.D. 282 with a less active wider interest in the mint.
I also actively collect Emesa, Alexandria and Laodicea-ad-Mare between A.D. 193 and A.D. 198.

I really like Londinium and Treveri, mostly due to their location in NW Europe. I'd like to think one of my ancestors could've been the moneyer at one of those mints. I don't own any Londinium coins and only few from Trier.

In general numismatics my favourite mint is Dorestad though (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorestad). The fact that Dorestad was the premier trade emporium and mint of the Carolingian empire has fascinated me so much that it led to my graduate thesis.

You know I like Antioch. Man that mint put out some fabulous Seleucid tetradrachms and the Constantine Era Manus Dei coins, along with a multitude of Roman Provincial Tetradrachms that really capture the style of location.

I'm partial to the history and culture of the Latin West, so mints like Rome, Ravenna, London, Milan, are my favorites. If I had to choose just one, I'd go with Rome. Its beauty and history is, in my mind, reflected in its coinage. From the days of the Roman Republic, to the twilight of Byzantine rule over the city in the 700s AD, Rome had pumped out coins with little interruption over the course of centuries under countless rulers and several states.

All are Rome mint coins:

I wish I could also show my Kingdom of Odoacer coin and early Papal silver from Rome but unfortunately I don't think I'll be having either for a very long time.

Ummm... Theopolis (or Theupolis) is Antioch, its name during Byzantine times, and coins from Theopolis can be had for cheap. Unless there's another Theopolis I don't know about

Yeah, Siscia mint was on overdrive for most of the 4th century AD. A lot of my common LRBs are from there.

I like Cherson for Byzantine:

and Antioch fro Byzantine under Justinian:

http://esty.ancients.info/interesti...stinian.html

because of the history associated with earthquakes.

For Roman, I like the coins of Tripolis:
