I have been reading the posts here, but I still have a simple question: Can I send in a coin for grading if I become an ANA member and how hard is it, or is it better to use my local coin store (which I have a great relation with). He is sending in 2 coins for me now and I don't know if it will cost me anything, he hasn't said. It is going to take a while. I have several more that I think should be sent. What do most of you do? Thanks for the input.

You can submit a coin to ANACS and others TPG by yourself without being an ANA member. Here is the ANACS submission form.

As an ANA member you are entitled to submit coins to NGC without being a member of their Collector's Society, to submit to PCGS you must either go through an authorized dealer or join their membership (at various levels and prices). ANACS does not require any club to join and accepts direct submissions as does ICG and SEGS.

I assume the dealer will charge you the cost of slabbing and postage there and back, the dealer get's a very small break on the price from the invoiced amount, sometimes a good dealer will pass that on to you, it is usually around 20%.

What are the coins you have had sent in? And to which grading company? I assume the dealer you are working with recommended them to be slabbed? As not all coins will benefit from being graded and slabbed, sometimes the cost of such a service is more than the coin is worth. Others cases it is almost mandatory to have a particular coin slabbed - if for the authentication alone.

I actually don't know what service, I'll see him tomorrow and ask. I'm sending in an 1883 Hong Kong 20 cent I'm hoping will be a mint state. Also a token of William Idler (I think). It was me who wanted to get them graded, not him. I have a few more (I've been posting some of them) and I think I want to do it myself if possible. If the price is not much different, it would save a lot of time to do it myself.

PCGS just opened Hong Kong offices, and NGC has been doing a lot of Hong Kong coins lately, I'm betting it was one of the two big guns in the industry.

Slight mis-statement. To submit to NGC you must be a Collector's Society member, however, there is a tier of membership that is free to ANA members and includes the ability to submit.

ANACS and ICG are open to all, while PCGS requires a paid membership. You can also submit to PCGS through member-dealers.
