I have pushed my skills envelop 3-4 steps too far. I have spent the afternoon reading the instructions for the stackshot and have now put my first stacked image together( about 3 times as many shots as I needed). Now what is obvious to me so far. Lighting and exposure compensation are where I am falling down (the two jansco's I put in the cupboard are coming out again. I think the Janscos are the only light source( I have) that will get light at the right angle on to the subject ( the microscope objective is very close to the coin. The next issue I believe is the coins angle to the objective... a true vertical shot just doesn't highlight the detail I want..... should I be tilting the coin slightly( thats what my instinct tell me. Theres probably heaps more questions I need answers to I just don't have the knowledge to know what those questions are. Here is the first trial with all its faults:
I'm sure Ray and/or Dave will weigh in on this soon but I tilt the coin to get the look I want. That's the beauty of stacking for me, shoot different areas in focus progressing through the coin detail and then let the program do the work.
OK I tilted the coin got my two janscos out of the cupboard( only to find one not working) I tilted the coin and used just one Jansco( I am going to go and buy another) This time using a 10 times objective:
Looks pretty good, but if you are working with an objective with short working distance it's usually better to have more diffuse illumination rather than directional. Directional is good if you're trying to emphasize a certain die characteristic that doesn't show up with more diffuse lighting.
The classic trick for small working distances is the pingpong ball. For coins I have enhanced the pingpong ball technique to include a darkening ring to keep light from hitting the coin from too low an angle and creating lighting on the sides of the devices. Here's the one I use with my 4x Nikon objective:

I didn't get a ping pong ball.....I recalled my niece had got one of those toys in a ball from a vending machine and one half of the ball was sitting in the spare room. ( her parents forgot to take it with them....well they have lost it now:
It works well I still need to work on my technique and I gotta remember to set the white balance hence the yellow tinge:
