I just wanted to know if this was a good deal and if it would be a decent set to take pictures of coins?
Being an extreme novice I know very little about cameras but have noticed the Rebel T3. What about the 75-300 lens if my understanding is correct that should be adequate?

When I buy a used camera I make sure the seller has taken good care of it, and first thing I look for is that the camera body has a body cap in place. Who knows how long the cap has been removed, and how much dust has accumulated inside the camera. It will cost you an extra $50-$75 to have it professionally cleaned, so factor that in.

The 75-300 lens is a good walk-around lens, but I would not recommend it for coins.

So overall I would pass.

Neither of those lenses will do much for you with coins. They're certainly not up to dSLR-level imaging in that category. The price is toughly equivalent to the 75-300 being free. It's a "downmarket" camera, using a previous-generation 12MP sensor and a feature set reduced from the 18MP T3i. All in all, not a great deal at $450.

Awesome. Thanks. rmpsrpms can you elaborate on the 75-300 lens not being a good coin lens. I thought since it had a 300 mm range and 4-5.6F it was about right? Anyone have any recommendations on a camera body? I will be shopping in the el-cheapo lens thread. Told you extreme novice

The stock lenses can't focus close enough to the coin, so the coin will be small on the sensor. Macro lenses are designed to focus close, so can fill the sensor with the coin. You need a magnification of at least 1:2 to work well for coins. Most stock lenses only go 1:5 at most.

I bought a Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 Macro lens to go with a Nikon D3200 camera and it does OK .
