Obviously a details coin, but I'm more curious about a couple things about the coin that bug me. On the one hand, you can see that the reverse is very lustrous, so I doubt it could be a counterfeit. And even if it was, why damage it with so many scratches? But I I don't like the tiny bumps on the obverse (look around the stars). Could these be a consequence of the damage? And the S mintmark looks small. Any experts on Trade dollar mint marks? I did an image search and did see images of the S on 1877 floating at a couple different sizes and positions, but of course I don't know if all the pics were of authentic coins. Thoughts?

So many fakes out there...I would only buy a graded coin(PCGS ANACS NGC) Looks nice with the chop marks and luster...but I won't guess as to whether fake or real. Best of luck!

I am NOT an expert on these, but I DO support the comments of atlashealth. This coin LOOKS OK to me, but I would need to take this piece to someone with a much more highly regarded opinion than my own.
Are those flaws around the stars raised or indented into the coin? Check it for comparative ring tone against a known genuine coin, and have it weighed very accurately, to the nearest 1/100 of a gram.
I will leave it to the experts here in the CCF for die detail.

I don't see anything immediately flagging it as counterfeit - that mint mark size and location is known to me - but I wouldn't go for it. The multiple chops are actually an encouragement, because they each represent a Chinese merchant's personal guarantee that the coin is genuine. However, it's been chopped far too hard to be desirable (to me). The chop at the end of AMERICA completely bent the coin.

It looks real to me and it looks high AU to mint state. Type Coin, why would you assume the chop marks would get the coin a details grade. I thought that they were acceptable on Trade dollars since so many of them were chopmarked.

I believe he's more worried about the straight scratches on both faces, which would do for a Details designation. The bend caused by that one chop would, also.
