interesting. this will make you guys cringe, true story unfortunately, my grandmother had 35 $1K notes in her safe (i don't know which issues, I never saw them), my mom helped her when she moved into the retirement home, and not knowing that they could be worth more than face value she took them and deposited in grandma's bank ! oh how I wish see would have told me before hand, they were probably in perfect condition too, she only mentioned it to me years later.

Probably did Grandma a real favour at least she got bank interest. Therte are just not a lot of collectors or demand for 1 K notes.

oh, I thought they went for above face value, i guess people try but not many actually sell them then ? that's a bit of a relief then, she didn't lose out like I thought.

she did not lose out on anything ....................... the market for thousand dollar notes is hardly a blip on the radar screen. Virtually no one cares to put out money for them.

Pacific.. like always is bang on correct....
As a collector... There are so many other interesting notes I can get for 1K.. I would rather pick up a few notes at a couple hundred dollars a piece which ad interest, colour and variety versus just one note...

I like the $1000 bill, have one of each of the QEII editions, not a devil's face though. :) Still would like to (some day when I'm rich) get a 1937 and 1935 $1000.

My thousand dollar bills are collecting interest in my TFSA so I can buy some really neat and meaningful stuff down the road. The Government just loves people who save old large denomination bank notes! They fall into the same category as those people who say they get a tax refund every year from the CRA, when in reality they just get back their interest free loan to the government.

To each his own I guess. I don't think $2000 is going to make or break me :)

When I collect things or see other people's collections, there is one measurement factor that few numismatics think about. The "wow" factor from non collectors. When I show people my vintage hockey cards or posters, guys will murmur about the Orr, Hull, and Howe. Even fewer people care about my comic book collection from the 1940's and 50's.....When you show them old paper money, everyone remembers seeing the 1954 $1's and $2's, or if you are really young, the 1975 $50 with RCMP musical ride. But I can assure you, when you show a girl, buddy or non collector, a $1000 bill, that always gets a "WOW"....followed up with "Can I hold it?"

Quote: there are still just over 900,000 of these notes that are unaccounted for! As of February 2014 there were 858,202 $1,000 bill outstanding and that included the ones from all the three series.

When my grandpa passed away, my dad had to go through the estate, and among it was a coffee can with a stash of $1000 notes in it (presumably in excellent shape). He was not a criminal by any means, but he was just old enough to have lived through the depression and did not trust banks to hold his money.
The part that made me mad was when my dad took them to the bank teller for deposit, she told him that he was lucky: they would probably not be accepted soon, and he was lucky he turned them in while he still could.
