I got this and was initially very pleased with it, it feels nice in the hand. Until I got the old camera out that is..... Are these pearls? Is this a seam? Does this seem to be plated? Edited by pishpash 09/22/2014 4:48 pm

I would doubt that it is plated as that would add extra cost to the process.
But that does appear to be a seam and yes those do appear to be bubbles formed during 'investment'.
This is getting very discouraging .......

The seam on the edge makes me wonder. Otherwise just looking at the coin it looks OK.

I don't know why my pics are not showing up. Deleted previous post to have another go. Could this be a sign of a sprue? These marks are on two parts of the coin, do they look like file marks or just wear and tear. Just call me paranoid.

I believe the coin is real. The seam from the earlier pictures gave me pause. If not there than I see nothing wrong with this coin.

I have to admit myself, what appears to be a seam in the picture DOES make me unhappy. That led me to consider the small indent in Herennia's neck not being an impact mark, the rough field in front of her mouth, and around the details of the seated figure.
The peripheral flan cracks are not rough inside the crack; they SHOULD be rough, indicating metal distress, as the crack opened up under striking pressure.
The accumulation of evidence, to my mind at least, leans towards my opinion that this coin was pressure cast.

The 3 tiny 'pearls' and scrap marks could arguably be an anomaly. The "seam" on the other hand cannot be dismissed in any sort of argument. Unless it is an optical illusion it is damning evidence of fakery. Once again we have a coin which seems to be quite convincing on cursory examination. But falls short

Thank you all for your opinions. Whilst I like the coin I think I will return it.

The coin looks ok from the pics provided but I would send it back if you have any doubt at all. No point having a coin in your collection that you will always be dubious about. The line along the side of the coin that you have shown can be found on original struck coins, sometimes you find it when the dies meet, I did have 2 in my collection but I got rid of both.

Thanks Kev, the seller has agreed to take it back. The coin is possibly OK, but the nagging doubt makes me uncomfortable, shame because I got it for less than £20 which I think was a good price.

It is a shame PP but once you have doubt about a coin, no point keeping it, you will always feel uncomfortable with it.
