For instance I was looking at a photograde ANACS coin that was graded MS 63/65, obverse/reverse, from 1982. Someone told me that in the early 80s, it went MS61, 63, 65...

Is that correct? If so, when did MS62, 64, etc. come in? Thanks. Ed

That is correct but I believe it was MS60, MS63, MS65 and (very rarely MS67). I've read the history but can't recall it specifically when the immediate grades were added in. I think MS61, 62, 64, 66, etc were added in the mid-1980's around the time PCGS was founded in 1986.

Yeah, you have the TPG's to thank for needing every number under the sun to describe a coin. Splitting hairs generates more business for them.

...and I am not sure what I would like to add is allowed in here so I will be quiet now.

Yeah, I'd hate to have to ban you for telling the obvious truth.

That pesky Bad Word Filter gets in my way too sometimes.

When the ANA grading guide was published in Nov 1977 ehere were only 3 MS grades, 60, 65, and 70. MS-70 was considered more of a theoretical grade and it was not expected to ever actually be used. These were the only MS grades when ANACS began grading March 1st 1979 as an experiment for six months. (six months that never ended) In August of 1980 MS-63 and 67 were added to the lineup. PCGS began operation in Feb 1986 using, in theory, all 11 grades. But in practice they rarely graded anything over MS-65. In July of 1986 the MS grades of 61, 62. 64. 66, 68, and 69 were officially added to the ANA grading guide and ANACS began using them as well. (It should be noted that in Jan of 1986 the ANA seriously considered a proposal to eliminate the numerical grades and return to a straight adjective grading system.)

Thanks Conder101! So it was August of 1980 that 63 and 67 were added and July of 1986 all the rest.

And I agree that staying with what was available in the early 1980's: MS60, 63, 65, 67, and a never used 70 would be good for the hobby.

Way, way back when I was a kid all their was for grades is G, F, Unc and P for Proof. Some places only had Un for Unc
I still see some of those in the Red Book.
Somewhere along the line I started to see VF, EF and Au. And then it got really nutty when they started with the numbers after the letters such as G-4. I always get a kick out of when I hear someone arguing whether it's a MS-62 or MS-63.
Soon enough some idiot will start a 100 point system with decimals such as a MS-91.483771 approximately.

That's why I never see AU when I look at catalogues from the late 70s and early 80s (the only ones my library has). Thanks for the explanation - I was just about to ask myself.

I found this article (link below) to be an interesting perspective on coin grading..
(Also maybe an argument for why CAC evolved)
