The flaking area above star 9, weak lettering on the reverse and surfaces have a grainy appearance to them.

Is this a genuine coin that's been harshly cleaned or a counterfeit? I'm not looking to buy this just peaked my curiosity.

MV, Looks like someone took a grinder to it. The dark spots, heavy carbon. IMHO
Looks real but a very rough life.

Most likely genuine, but polished to death. Ouch.

It looks like it was sand blasted. I tried it once with a silver quarter a few years back and it looked exactly like that.

This coin is being offered by the same seller as the highly polished and damaged Mercury dime mentioned in a different thread.

I've added this seller to my list of ones to avoid.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

Iwas leaning towards cleaned with the obverse, but as grainy as that reverse is I think a cleaned fake. Regarldless, as mentioned, not a coin that wiuld be on my radar anyaway.

It's been heavily polished, but what strikes me as odd is the extrmely far left placement of the mintmark. I don't think I've seen one like that.

Jeeze Louise! If that coin sees anymore polishing there would be a hole right through it.

In that condition it's only an eight cent piece.
