I was wondering if it matteres about the condition these coins are in, like if I found a very dirty one should I keep it or throw it back into circulation?
Thanks from Washington

I'd rather keep a banged up coin until I found something better to replace it. That being said if it meant something to me, I keep it until it was a cold, cold day.

So much depends on if you need money. If not, just keep it for now. Nothing to loose.

Bamged up or not, isn't it still rare?

86 million nickels and 146 million dimes were minted in 2009. While that's far below the normal mintages for those coins, it's hard to say that these coins are "rare." They may be hard to find, but that doesn't automatically mean they're worth a lot of money, if that's what you're asking.

If it was me, I'd keep it, simply because it is hard to find them in circulation and it makes for a nice story.

My 2 cents -

It is interesting how difficult it can be to find circulating 2009 coinage. I wasn't finding any 2009 Jeffersons for a bit, but then I started getting a few here and there. Most are circulated; dings, scratches, blemishes. But a few are pretty nice and worthy of sticking in an album. Find one better; replace the previous coin.

I will save higher grade 2009 coins but I let the others back into the wild. As noted here, the premiums these coins will fetch will vary, but modestly so. Those sitting on boxes of nickels might live long enough to see their investment double (the artificial scarcity created a few years ago has passed and now we are seeing a return to normalcy). Folks would be better off sinking $100 into a real rare coin IMHO as that would likely fetch a higher dividend. But, to each their own.

Marketers can create a frenzy of artificial scarcity without much trouble. Boxes of Twinkies carried a premium for a short while too. Some folks were able to cash in on the frenzy there as did the folks getting 4X+ for a box of 2009 nickels. But once the cream is gone though, there's not much incentive to hanging on. Likely, those who bought the 2009s for 4X+ have incurred a net loss but maybe their grandkids will prosper. Maybe that was the plan all along.

While 2009 nickels and dimes (pennies too) are much harder to find in circulation than other recent dates, they will never be rare. So it really comes down to why you are keeping it. If you are filling an album then keep the best one you find. If want to sell it at a premium in the short term, then you will probably only get more than face for uncirculated specimens. There are many of us (myself included) who would keep anything from 2009 just because they are "hard to find". If it is too beat up though then I just spend it.

For a $0.05 investment on a coin you like to collect. Why even debate? Keep it, whatever condition. It may never be worth anything more than 5 cents, but if you find enjoyment in collecting 2009 coins, I say why not? Same reason I collect every Wheat penny I find in tubes and sort every pre-82 penny I find in a bucket. May never be worth more than face value but I still enjoy finding and sorting these coins. Feels like every one I find in my change is a found treasure.

Ohh yes, a couple years ago when I moved to the area I'm in now and didn't know anyone (was also single), I would buy $10 of penny rolls a week and sort them by hand/eye on my free time. My ratio was usually 1:100 for wheaties. I haven't done this in awhile now.
