Today I received a lovely AE-18 of Elagabalus from Nicopolis ad Istrum with reverse of Priapus and his enormous phallus. It has nice details and a deep green patina. Priapus' "endowment" in fully visible.

I won it as an unattributed coin on ebay UK.

Sorry! I didn't know Priapus needed to be "edited". And I'm a Lutheran minister!

Perhaps if you would have abstained from emphasising what it was, it could have been avoided

But what it is is what makes it such an interesting coin.

Oh well, lesson learned.

It'd probably be the most interested they'd ever be in a coin.

I suspect it was emphasized quite enough on the actual coin.

Pretty funny censorship. Kinda reminds me of when of when Europeans first rediscovered the ruins of Pompeii. Romans always were so fond of the male equipment.

I have the same coin but in the interest of avoiding censorship will refrain from posting the edited version :)

If interested you can see it posted on a number of other coin forums.

These coins of Priapus often elicit tittering but I wonder if the effect was the same in ancient Roman days. I suspect not.

It seems silly to edit Priapus. That is an actual ancient coin. Those of us who belong to this site are interested in ancient coins. Anyone offended by that should not collect ancient coins; they depict killing (soldier spearing fallen horseman) which is surely worse than depicting some naked ancient god (by the way, on ancient coins, including the GENIO POPVLI ROMANI of the tetrarchy, Goods are often naked). No big deal.
