I did not even know this US coin existed. It looks so weird how did the design even get approved.
Back in March 1935, the City of Hudson, NY got their local Representative and Senators to introduce legislation in the US Congress calling for a commemorative coin to mark the 150th anniversary of the founding of Hudson. The legislation passed the House and Senate and was signed into law by President Roosevelt.
The City of Hudson hired an artist - Chester Beach - to design the coin. His designs of Henry Hudson's ship - the
Half Moon - for the obverse and the Seal of the City of Hudson (which featured Neptune riding a whale) for the reverse were accepted.
Though it was a very local event - and not really worthy of a US coin - it was a time when many local groups were being successful in getting commemorative coins authorized. It is just one of many examples within the classic series of US commemoratives.
These coins make up a very interesting segment of the US coin universe. I hope you get a chance to spend some time learning about them.
