So what does the forum think of this coin? Fake? Tooling? What do the pictures tell you?

If it's real it big bucks. Is it coming from a well known dealer? Coins like this unless they are certified I stay away from. Not that I could ever afford to buy a Roman gold coin.

Firstly, I do not have the experience required to identify a fake of this particular type. The style is quite variable and only extensive familiarity would give me any confidence in my ability to do so. Having said that and just treating this as an exercise...there are things about this coin that would make me seek expert reassurance. It has definitely been poorly cleaned or even lightly tooled. The style is clumsy, even by normal standards for this type. I have been down a long list of them on ACSearch and none seem to have a surface with the multiple small pits that appear on this coin. Because the surface has been extensively worked upon, signs of forgery could easily have been obscured. In short, even if I had the cash to spend on this type of item, I would not want it even with expert authentication. Although the style is clumsy, an expert might tell me that was not abnormal, but I would rather wait until I felt even richer and get an example which screamed authenticity to me personally.
