This one is not so clear to me. The obverse could be Himera (Nymph) or it could be Athena, or Demeter? The reverse I think is a 'Butting Bull'. Can anyone 'pair' the two of them for me please? AE17, Wt 3.3 gm Edited by Topcat7 10/05/2014 01:52 am

Let me give you an other option: it could be the head of Persephone/Kore From what I can read in front of her face I would recommend that you look at the last picture on page 123 of the 2nd edition of Sear's book on Greek Coins.

Medievil (sic) To someone who does not have that edition, of that book, the reference is somewhat obtuse. Would you care to extrapolate further and perhaps quote what I might find there (with pictures, please)?

Sear really doesn't give too much info. Struck under the reign of Agathokles 317-289 BC, Head of Kore facing left, wreathed with corn, behind corn grain. Before the bust in Greek legend which spells out SYRAKOSION. Reverse is a Bull butting. Your coin is a little small than the one listed in Sear. So it could be either Sear 1195 listed at 23 or 1196 listed at 15mm.

'echizento' spoiled the fun Quote: To someone who does not have that edition, of that book, the reference is somewhat obtuse. As I said before, you really need some sort of reference book on hand and Sear's Greek Coins is a (simple) standard reference. Your local coinshop should (hopefully) have a copy you can look into - if not, find another coinshop Maybe you can get a secondhand copy - it's in two volumes. Staff note: Hotlinking to Wildwinds no longer works, link to image removedIf you look close at your coin you will notice the Iota & Omega of the "syrakosIOn" in front of the nose of Persephone. Postscript - Greek lettering: ΣYPAKOΣIΩN

Medieval, Hotlinking to Wildwinds does not work any longer so the image will not show up here.

You can make a link to the wildwinds website, you just can't make it so it pulls an image from there and shows it here (hotlinking). If you just remove the (img) tags it should work.
edit: The reason for it is that it uses up their bandwidth when people do that, and a site that doesn't get a ton of traffic could blow past their allotted bandwidth if an image is hotlinked on a popular website.

That's fine, the image linking is the only thing that doesn't work any longer.
