I think it is just dirty because of the shiny stuff showing in the scratches of the rim. Idk if annealing is just effects the surface or not.

PMD - buried/acid damage

should be a solid gunship grey.. any varied color, red or silver showing through is environmental or PMD

Someone has heated it up to red heat on the elements of an electric stove, then dropped it into cold water.

Try it for yourself with a modern nickel in top condition.
It's fun!
You will fool lots of people with it!

ANYONE can 'improperly anneal' a nickel in this way. It is something to occupy an idle mind in the coming winter months.

I usually put them back into circulation.
