This is the result of a couple of hours worth of headscratching and swearing.

Interesting. Not much for luster, but really neat contrast and excellent detail. This looks like fluorescent lighting.

Weird but my first thought was also "interesting". I like the detail but the lighting seems a bit harsh and yeah no luster. Kind of like a black & white of coin photography.

Usually the goal is to maximize the dynamic range and expose most of the pixels toward the middle tonal ranges. This image is a bit over-exposed, with many blown-out highlights and the majority of the pixels toward the upper end of tonal range. There are very few dark pixels, so not much shadow detail. A little less exposure (-0.5EV, max -1EV) will bring down the histogram away from over-exposure, and a bit more contrast will give the coin some shadow detail. Some of this can be done in post-processing but too much processing makes the coin look artificial, so is to be avoided.

Hmm, same lighting as before, but lower exposure and and higher shutterspeed. (so now it's too dark?) It's darn hard to be a perfectionist!

The coin looks "dead". Lots of dipped coins have this appearance. A bit of contrast would help too.
What lighting setup are you using?

Hello aleroe,
Because it is almost impossible to know the true state of a coin's appearance without having it physically in hand, could you tell us if it exhibits any cartwheel effect when tilting it in various positions/angles under axial lighting?
It's impossible to 'squeeze blood out of a turnip' or see luster from a dull-looking coin.
This info., although not 100% conclusive, would at the least further assist us to drill down on arriving at an even more applicable suggestion for the photo to appear as lifelike as possible.

Not to be a smart Alec but have you tried taking a picture using natural lighting only?
