Sorry for stretching 'ancient' a bit but methinks it fits best into this forum. The Venetian Republic build a maritime empire over the centuries: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republ...Kolonien.pngStaff note: Text is in english so comment not needed.Plenty information on the history can be found, so I stick to the coins: Grosso - Lorenzo Tirpolo (1268-175) CNI#5 Soldino - Francesco Dandolo (1329-13390 CNI#29 Tornasello - Andrea Contarini (1368-1382) CNI#68 Tornasello - Antonio Venier (1382-1400) CNI#54 Bagattino - Anonymous issue after 22/01/1604 CNI#546 12 Bagattini (= Soldo) - Giovanni (John) Corner (1625-1629) Edited by Medieval 10/06/2014 10:01 pm

Here two from Crete, the Italian name for Heraklion the capitol of Crete is Candia and the Venetians applied the name to the island as well, calling their possession "Regno Candia". 2 1/2 Soldini = 10 Tornese ND Prolucci#878 This type of coinage was decreed three times, 15/01/1611, 18/07/615 and 12/03/1618. Gazetta = 2 Soldi issued after 1659, so in the last years of Venetian rule.

Nice coins. Depending on who you talk to some folks think Ancient coins extend into the Middle ages. So I have no problem with them being here.

Finally one from, the Ionian Islands: 2 Soldi = Gazetta, minted in the first half of the 18th century. The inscription reads: CORFV / CEFALOL / ZANTE the Italian names for Kerkira / Keffalinia / Zakinthos

Interesting spread. I see a weak point in my collection habits.

I think going up to around 1453, the fall of the Byzantine Empire is OK. Anything beyond that is pushing it and should go into the World Coin section.

i think that's a good as date as any ski. another interesting boundary, like the ancient/medieval border. I in my collection, the post 1500 coins go in with my moderns, IF they were milled. hammered coins from around the same time go in with my medieval coins.

September 4, 476 to around late 1400s I consider medieval (some places "got out" of the medieval era a little later than others). That includes the earliest Byzantine issues.

Amongst others I have come across the following three key events in various history books to define the cut-off between medieval and (pre-) modern period: 1. Luther (ie 1517) 2. The Fronde (either start 1648 or end 1653) 3. Cromwell (also 1653) But if 'echizento' wants to go with the end of the '100 years war' it's okay as well.

Well this is a grey area. The Section is for Ancient Greek and Roman coins, which I'm sure included the ancient Eastern empires. As long as I've been here we included the Byzantine empire which lasted until the late middle ages. Technically not an Ancient Empire or is it? So if we go by the section title all empires beyond the fall of the Roman empire really don't belong here. But if you look at the World coin section, they really don't belong there either. So for the most part coins for the middle ages ended up in the Ancient coin section. What I'm going to do is contact the forum owners and see if we can expand this section to include coins until to say 1600. Personally I feel that any coin beyond that date should going into the World coin section.

Would definitely be better to have a clear forum to put medieval coinage in. Probably better than creating a separate forum since that might create more confusion and there is probably a significant overlap between the collector population for ancients and medievals.

Ask them if they can add the word "medieval" in the forum title somewhere as well, that would help IMO. Something like the "Ancient and Medieval" forum.
