Hello CCF,

I am interested in buying a scale to weight my stuff, specifically one perfect for coins. The thing is, I have no idea where to start at all

All I know is that I want one that
--is easy to use
--looks ascetically good (optional)
--can measure in grams, ounces, troy ounces
--has a minimum of 400 gram weight limit
--is as CHEAP as possible (to save money to buy coins )

Not too picky about the brand. If this thread is in the wrong place, sorry, but I just would appreciate help from the CCF world on this. If you see any good deals on the bay ( ebay) or somewhere else, feel free to put a link.

Thanks in advance

Why the high weight limit? My scale has a 50 gram max, and I havn't met a coin yet that's heavier than that. I don't do bullion or plate coins though.

And I agree with John1, 0.01g resolution minimum

I guess my "dream scale" doesn't exist (that, or I didn't look hard enough).

I did find this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-Poc...em5666dd50b4

Looks good, size is good, 500g max, 0.01g, has grams/oz but I don't think that I will use the other 2 units of weight (whatever they even are) and price is good.

I'll keep looking though; what are the kinds of scales you guys use/recommend?

In Shanghai China, when I went there, they were selling scales for 50 Yuan (~$7) I haggled it down to 35Y ($5).
These scales are pocket sized so I guess you could call them aesthetically pleasing.

--is easy to use Yes
--looks ascetically good (optional) Yes
--can measure in grams, ounces, troy ounces --> They can weigh in grams, ounces, and Taels (Chinese equivalent of Troy Ounce, which is 37g)
--has a minimum of 400 gram weight limit --> 500g
--is as CHEAP as possible (to save money to buy coins ) --> $5

Unfortunately, you kinda have to get them from China... And that they can't weigh in troz. But Taels is handy with chinese coins.

Booking a few hundred dollar flight to China to buy a $5 scale, what a GREAT idea

I found a biddable version of the scale in the link above above for 0 bids at $8.25. It'll do, and I can always just do math to convert oz/ozt and grams/grains, so I'll give this a whirl.

I would probably get a scale that has a weight limit of 100g maybe 200g but no more. 100g will probably cover at least 99% of the coins out there. I would want the scale to have a readability of 0.01g. Having the instructions glued to the back cover can be useful at times.
So maybe something like this:

Just paid/won the auction.

$8.25 for a 500g scale of 0.01g accuracy. I can use it for coins AND my relatives can use it to weight their stuff that they sell on ebay as well, so it has multipurpose usage.

I just bought this one for $7.89. Seems reasonable for what I need. I have access to precision balances at work, so I will mostly use this for postage and quick weights.

Such scales are available in many places for less than $10. A few cents one way or the other should not matter. Only problem is to find one that is returnable if doesn't work. Most do though. Glad you can use one that much. I've got a few of them I purchased a long time ago and used only once. Then put away as with many things. Hopefully you get to use yours more.
