I'm not a "hardcore" collector and I only have a few coins I've picked up over the years. This one has been with me for over twenty years but I just recently took a close look at her. I was excited after putting it under magnification and discovering she was in better condition than I had thought. What grade do you think she would bring? Edited by ny_rebel 10/07/2014 8:05 pm

Sorry, this post was intended for a different coin thread.

Montana thanks, I personally can't figure the grade that some coins receive. I personally feel it is around a 62. The strike looks a little weak on the reverse on the "ONE DOLLAR".

Wait, I was actually looking at a different coin. I agree with the 62 because above the ear doesn't look fluffy enough.

Um, this is a heavily polished, circulated coin....

Thanks for the info Dave. How can I tell if a coin has been polished. I looked for polish marks under magnification and couldn't detect any. Thankfully I didn't pay anything for it, it was given to me by a friend years ago...

Looks AU possibly cleaned to me. The flatness of the hair is a possible polish job

And doesn't the lettering give it away too?
The feathers on the eagle breast are also missing.

I am sorry to say but its in sad shape. You need to go to some of the Morgan threads on the US Classic Coins section and see what unpolished Morgans look like.

Thanks all, So it seems 48 to 50 would be the top of the mark for this one...I still think it's a keeper

streg , I'm sorry... I've looked at many... very many, and cannot tell you which are polished and which are not.... I see the wear on the high points of the one I have... and the shallow lettering under the eagle on the reverse....I have viewed it under high magnification and do not see any swirl marks only incidental contact marks and some wear. I guess that's why I don't buy or sell them ...

It looks polished to me because of that artificial "mint luster" that only polished coins would have. It looks like a very "dull" shine.
