So I am uploading Morgan that was my lowest grading of the bunch. I was a bit surprised, but the more I look at them, I think I am starting to see a difference.

Please guess grading (NGC) and I will post actual later.

AU-53?
Hard to pinpoint the grade from the pictures but I think it probably given one of the AU grades.

You guys are CRAZY

Good.

It's scary. It was an AU 55.

The only big difference I noticed between the others is a lack of luster. What is the big give away to make it AU 55?

To me it does not have the "flash" that you typically see on unc Morgan dollars. On unc dollars the luster should be "unbroken" and the "flash" should just jump out at you. The more coins you look at, the more you'll see what I'm talking about.

I pegged it at 55 because I've seen thousands of AU coins just like it. Be especially careful with 79-0 and 84-S dollars. There are thousands and thousands of those dates that look just like your coin. People try to pass them off as "Uncs" all the time. (I wished I had a dollar for every AU 84-S I've seen in 2x2's trying to be passed off as "unc"!)

Use this graded coin as a learning tool. Carry it with you to coin shows and learn from it.

I think the amount of mint luster remaining is a major factor differentiating the AU grades since they all have about the same level of detail remaining, unless weakly struck. Areas that have wear tend to look more scuffed up, duller, and darker. Compare the AU coin with your graded MS morgans, preferably without too many marks and white and you will begin to see differences.

For Morgans the rub tends to appear first on liberty's hair above ear and eagles chest, but watch out for O minted coins with weak stricks.
