So I've just started looking at some american classics, in particular carson city stuff, and I need some help. Does the date on this 1877 quarter look wrong? I know my canadian coins, but I'm a newbie with the american stuff.

The low feedback score doesn't help either.

I wouldn't touch it. The mint mark doesn't bother me, but the images are just insufficient to explain what I'm seeing. It's a heavily-circulated coin, unlike what the seller claims, and I couldn't do better than VF on it. The streaks on the obverse are unnatural, as is the color caked around some (but not all) of the stars. These can be weakly struck on the reverse, so the apparent difference in wear from the obverse is disturbing but potentially explainable.

The seller is new, but I don't see any real red flags about him, just the coin. The bidding is, right now, as far as I'd stretch for this one and even then I know I'd be taking a chance.

What about the numbers themselves? Most other '77s I've compared them with have a much thicker top bar on the 7, and the 8 doesn't compare well either.

Yes, that too. The quality of the photography may be involved there, though, so for me it's just another factor in the "I'm not going there" decision.

Fake. I have an 1877 Seated quarter (not a CC though) and the date looks nothing like that.

I don't know enough about these to pick bad ones.
Nevertheless, from the picture,
it looks too 'iffy' for me.

If he wants to sell it, at least supply better pictures.

No way it is real. The date is characteristic of one from much earlier in the series.

The picture is very bad and part of the odd appearance of the date may be from the highlites and shadows making it look thinner and misshapen.
