Looks weird. Would think it was PMD but no obvious scratches, etc where the coin would've been worn.

Not getting my hopes up, just a bit odd.

So how could you hold a coin down and remove the rim without affecting the faces of the coin?

What comes to mind is a triangle placement of brads to hold the coin in place and tapped deep enough into a board that the edges of the coin are still able to be altered.
