I found this coin in the sand in my yard in the Eastern Sierra Nevadas, halfway between Bodie, CA and Carson City, NV. Seems like the genuine article, but what is it, and what is its approximate age? Thanks for any info anyone can provide!

Can't tell if my images uploaded. Your instructions are a little complex. If not, guess you can't help me.

As per uploading images, press reply to topic at the top and you will see "upload images" as tag on the bottom of the window, this is what you can use when the image is located on your comp. If from the net, you have to press the tag next to "Media" above the window.

If it is the genuine article as you suspect, it should be easy to give you more information.

Postscript;

Before you upload your picture check the size. If it is over 100KB the easiest way is to resize it with 'paint' to bring it down below the 100KB mark.

Try uploading your image to photobucket and imbedding the image.

What you are describing is a "cash" coin, most likely from imperial-age China. They were last made in 1912, but most are from about 1680-1850 when China's economy was strongest. The vast majority are genuine, and worth between $0.50-3.00. They were made by the millions or billions, and face value was 1/1000 of a silver tael, or about US $0.001

True for China, but the very last of round square-holed cash were made in Vietnam in 1945.
