I picked this coin up a couple of weeks ago, it was in a tin of coins I bought at a car boot sale for £2. It "looks" Indian to me but I haven't seen another one like it on the net so any advice most welcome.

The coin is 21mm wide and just over 3mm deep, it weighs exactly 11.4 grams. There are markings on the edge of the coin which are "X" and "+" and there could be other markings which have been eroded with time / wear.

I've been looking all over the net for the past couple of weeks and info on this coin would be very much appreciated.

All the best,

Mike.

I don't believe this coin is ancient of medieval. It's looks more like one of the modern Indian Princely States. I'm going to move this over to the Unidentified coin section where you should be able to get the information your looking for.

BTW, I like your user name. Pink Floyd is one of my favorite Rock groups.

Your two quid are NOT wasted. Such coins have nice prices. If you do not want to keep this coin, please sell it to me!
These coins are manually struck.
Date, I guess between 1700 and 1900.
I will try to find a determination.
The countermarks on the rim is from traders to mark that they accept this coins as legal money.
You can send the pictures to these sites:
http://www.chiefacoins.com/
http://www.zeno.ru/
Both are reliable sites.
I think there is a date at the top of the second picture
The bottom of that picture has the mintplace, but it is a little bit worn.
You should rotate the first picture.

to the CCF!

Thick 'dump' rupees in about this condition can be had for around $40 on the Australian coin market.
You have a nice coin for two quid!

These coins are made of nearly pure silver.

I would need to do some research in my Krause World Coins books 18th and 19th Centuries to identify with a visual match for identification.

Indeed Mediëval, you are correct.
Pink Floyd, you should know that the dies Always are bigger than the plate and the is not Always centered.
Your coin looks like this:

The date is indeed at top of the coin and looks like 1916 (Vikrama Samvat era). That is 1859AD.
And look at the prices in that link!
Your two quid are well spend, don't you think?
