Hi folks,
Need help grading this comemerative half, since there are not the usual and customary pick up points on regular issue circulation coins. I got it on ebay, listed under tokens. The seller said he was not a coin dealer and that bidders should use there own judgement. anyway I got caught up in the bidding, hope I didn't pay too much for it...any help on grading appreciated.

also I am puzzeled by the different toning on the two sides..any thoughts on this?

The coin looks to be an About Uncirculated (AU) example to my eyes. I see wear on the high points of the obverse (eagle's chest, legs, talons). The reverse also appears to have wear, but the image is not of sufficient quality to assess in detail.

I'm not seeing much of a toning difference between the two sides based on your images. The obverse (star & eagle side) does look "dirtier" to me, however. It may have been the side that was in direct contact with whatever holder was used to store it.

Retail on an AU example is about $120.00.

BTW: I noticed your reference to "Alamo Commemorative." The coin is actually referred to as the "Texas Independence Centennial" half dollar among collectors.

Based on the pics I'd give it a 63/64 grade. It might be better, or worse, in hand. From the appearance it appears to be nice, original and most importantly ----- UNCLEANED!

I have bought and sold hundreds of Texas halves over the years and the numbered of cleaned coins on the market far outweighs the uncleaned specimens. That is a sad fact as it is a beautiful coin.

The 1936 coins are from the Centennial year and they are one of the best strikes of the years they were minted (1934-1938). The hardest year to find with a good strike and luster is the 1938 coins. Most of those I see are dull and washed out.

On your coin, the differences in toning is probably due to storage. One side may have been exposed to a high sulphur content paper while the other side may have been exposed to just the air. Temperature and humidity plays into it too.

It is a nice coin and if you like it is all that matters. We have all at one time or another paid too much for something we like.

I concur with the main points of feedback that have already been conveyed ... Thanks to the CCF experts for their prompt input.

I am going with high AU for this 1936-D Texas half dollar ... based on the photos provided believe there is circulation rub on the obverse high points ... the reverse photo is not of sufficient resolution for me to offer an opinion.

Very nice example of a tremendous classic silver commemorative ... Thanks for sharing.
