Poll Question
Now with Alphabetic Denominations in full swing and finding some interest, I was thinking what else might be interesting. The country listing started by 'NumisRob' was a good one and should be repeated in my opinion, but perhaps one other first. With many coins depicting animals this could be a good choice, so I put it up here for a vote. Not sure if all letters can be filled with English language animal names - there are plenty though from antilope to zebra. So if no coin is posted by 12 noon (as per forum clock) using the scientific name would be okay as well, eg Canis Lupus for a coin depicting a Wolf (there are Cats for 'C' though). Start would be intended for the 1st of November, leaving scope to start 'NumisRob's country listing on the 27th to be finished before the holiday season. Please vote and leave your opinion. Note: I make this poll now so that a decision can be made soon and contributions be prepared if it is a go. Results

I don't see any problem with more A-Z treads.
There are ton's of active theme threads, and doing it over a course of days might be more interesting than "Post a random pic when ever you feel like it" type threads.
I don't think finding an animal with a certain name is going to be as hard as finding that animal on a coin.
Also maybe have a rule that once an animal has been posted it can't be posted again unless it's a different country, or at least different design for the same letter. I'm thinking of the LOG-JAM for Eagle, Snake/Serpant(How many Mexican coins have a bird killing a snake?)
And what about Dragons, Unicorns, you said scientific name... are you excluding mythical animals?

Quote: And what about Dragons, Unicorns, you said scientific name... are you excluding mythical animals? Good point 'ASLAN_TVorlon'. Mythical animals would be just fine, they don't have scientific names but my comment on scientific names was only for the case that no-one would post a coin with an animal whose English name would start with the letter of the day. Not sure how many animals have names starting with X or Y (for example) and I would like to see generic types. For an explanation 'bald-headed eagle' would fall under E and 'yorkshire terrier' would fall under D (for dog). Your comment on avoiding massive repetitions is welcome, there should not be a stampede of showing every eagle design from the USA or the German states. But one should give people the opportunity to show different picture of the same type of animal - would like some comments on how to limit that.

H For Human I remember a comedy bit where they were talking about a Xylophone Fish... but that would come under F for Fish. And what country has Xylophone Fish on their coins anyway? Not sure how that whole D for Dog, E for Eagle idea is going to work. If you let the Yorkshire Terriors be on Y than there will be at least one on that day.

I would agree that if it is a specific animal, you could use the more specific name, like the beluga whale on the Canadian quarter under B or the Manx cat under M. (As long as it's not arbitrary like "scrawny eagle" from a German 10 Euro )

My problem with the more specific names 'Anwyll_Rwden' is that it would result in confusion, like Indian Elephant vs African Elephant, Pharao Dog vs Yorkshire Terrier etc etc etc. There are plenty options for most letters without crowding in various species of eagle, falcon, dogs and cats to name but a few.
Postscript:
Might consider a similar exception for those though, when no more generic animal has been posted by noon.

Too many rules ! A letter per day , ask people not to repeat coins and/or keep to a single entry (per day per poster)

Only 6 votes so far, doesn't seem to be much interest. Need a few more contributors to make it worth while. Anyone else?

Just do it!
There might be less contributions because things are getting more specific. Countries > Denominations > Coins with animals, now a small subset of all coins.
Certainly I can criticize the A-Z format: A different letter per day is slightly annoying. You may be too busy that day, or think of a good coin too late. It seems out of place to comment on an "A" coin when you are already in the middle of the alphabet. The anglicized names of things can be silly.
Still it is a fun way to see a lot of countries/denominations/animals/whatever that you may normally not.

No option for what I'm thinking, which is "I love alphabetic topics, but this particular one probably won't work out". I suppose we could do an alphabetic series for any objects featured on coins (including animals), but even then we'd hit problems of what does something start with exactly, and there still won't be much on X or Y. One alphabetic topic that I would definitely like to see would be by city/mint name (Arles, Berlin, Charlotte...), but that's likely both too similar to the country one and too obscure to be popular, unfortunately.

Thanks for all the comments, since there seems not much interest to contribute I will give it a miss - was hoping that there would be more responses on the weekend.
But yes, there are many potential themes as was pointed out in the last two posts. So if anyone wants to start something up (with a little advanced warning) I will contribute as I can.
