Hi all,

New to all of this so sorry if this is a popular/common coin. I was given this coin with a bunch of others from my grandparents a few years ago. All the others were fairly modern but this one seems to be the oldest.

Does anyone know what coin it is, and if they are rare or quite common? I know the condition of it isn't great either!

Thanks!

James II Irish Gun Money.
Your example is a shilling, and was minted in October 1689.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly.

Not much what can be added to that, except that it is one of the few coinages which are dated not only with the year but also the month. There are several varieties on how "OCTober" is written, 4 starting with "O" and 4 starting with "8".

Yours is in quite nice condition but it's not one of the rare varieties.
