There was a used book sale on campus and I picked this up for $2. Sold prices on ebay are quite inconsistent compared with the book price, but most of the time book price is between 2-5x lower. This book is old...

When I see them at a garage sale for under a buck and in nice shape I get them. My oldest is a 1962 in mint condition it's also my birth year I think I paid $7 on the bay. John1

I don't actually need a Red Book (and my library has a 1983 anyway if I need one) but for $2, why not? By the way, the photo is acting a bit strange. It is rotated when I look from my computer but the right way up from mobile.

Looks like it's in mint condition. For $2.00, heck yeah.

Good pick up. I wished I would have saved mine from 60s and 70s.

Nice pick-up! My oldest Red Book is 1961, where I bought it for $2 (The same amount you did!)

Although came out in 1946, was dated 1947 and that system of a year ahead remains today. I once saw a pile of them at a flea market for $1/each. Since I had them all, I didn't buy those but sure wish I did. Would have been nice to have a spare set.

No longer mint, unfortunately. The hard cover has small damages here and there. I would still get it even if it was priced at $5.50, which is what is on the sticker. I wish I have more Canadian catalogues though. I could only find a 1996 Charlton, but at $2 when the cover price is $12.96 it's an awesome bargain. My library only has up to 1988, so this is an upgrade.
Seeing as some people keep a lot of the different year catalogues, is there some info on one year's catalogue that is different from the next? In Charlton they focus on a certain topic at the back of the book, which changes every year.

In Charlton they focus on a certain topic at the back of the book, which changes every year. The Red Book changes every year for many reasons. One is to update coins minted each year. This means adding info on all new coins and commemoratives too. Also, Whitman attempts to update coin values of all coins each year but that is really not done well. They have always been considered excessive in their values of coins. Also, many other items need updating including a section on how valuable old Red Books are. And too, some collectors look for errors in that book just as with coins. For example one year there was a missing page in some issues. Another year there was an upside down page in some. Once I wrote to Whitman Publishing about all the errors I found in their last issue.

Old Red books are really interesting. My oldest is a 1964 that I got for free at a show. It's interesting to see what coins cost back then. For example, how many of you would want to get a 1916-D Merc for $60?

just carl, the 1983 Red Book in my library looks like this: If it's overpricing coins you're talking about, I noticed the same problem in Canadian catalogues. The pieces listed are crazy high. I wonder where they got these prices from. CoinCollector, from my book you can get a G-4 1916D merc for $155 By the way, are these older catalogues in demand?

There are collectors of the RedBook, but other than some special issues distributed at various coin shows, and the first five or so issues, they are of very little value.
