I'm thinking this is maybe something to do with Prague during the Rule of Rudolph II, uniface medal/token or error? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. *** to Ancient/Medieval coin section for more comments.

The arms at the bottom look like the arms of Austria. Doesn't look a coin or a test-strike or similar - the coins of that period would have a crown where the "G" is. My guess it is some sort of medallion (or just one side of it) commemorating some event of 1583 - may have been struck any time thereafter, ie could be quite modern. Perhaps the birth of Wallenstein, a famous Austrian general.

'Pinpoint' thanks, learnt something new.
Seems that they were given to council members for attending meetings. Please correct me if I am wrong. Could they be used for purchases or were they just presentation tokens?

Google translate might no be the best, but it does give the general idea: http://translate.google.com/transla...=en&sl=nl&u=http://www.bodemvondstenwereld.nl/viewtopic.php%3Ff=34&t=53202&prev=/search%3Fq=Raadsteken&client=firefox-a&hs=6Eg&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=rcs Quote: "This is a council stabbing of Groningen. This council signs were for deferred payment of attendance to mayors, members of the town council and other staff to council meetings or other activities attended. This council signs could be spent whether present or while sitting in the City Wine occurred to quench thirst. they also could be exchanged or given to comply. Though so basically only suitable for limited use, this was "money" also by other leases payable and duty to him in payment to the city steward against conventional money city residents accepted because it was clear that the city government is to confer a certain value. A bit clearer info from the Groninger Museum
"Council Stabbing nd (ca. 1540/50), Puister 1901, front Groninger Museum Collection GMZN3 Within a roll double eagle with shield on the tail crossbar Mayors and councilors were in the 16th century an attendance penny (board or stretch marks) for attending a board meeting. These could then spend on wine or beer in the city winery. It is certain that in 1577 this council signs were used as coins in Groningen."

The category is ok . In the title , you have 2 possibilities : Groningen : Raadsteken or Groninger Raadsteken with a R (raadsteken of Groningen ) and bierpennig is written : bierpenning . good luck with e-bay , let us know when you sell it Albert
